The Coate family has specialized in the cultivation of willow in Southwest England since 1819. They have been producing the world's finest willow charcoal for artists for over 30 years. Each year the very best willow rods are selected to produce artist grade willow charcoal. The willow is sorted by diameter and burned in its natural shape, not compressed like most charcoals. This creates a charcoal with a velvety smooth stroke and a rich, deep black hue.
Artists' charcoal is a form of dry art medium made of finely ground organic materials that are held together by a gum or wax binder or produced without the use of binders by eliminating the oxygen inside the material during the production process.
As this is a product of nature, no piece of willow charcoal is identical and varies in diameter and size.
